A little-known subculture of the GDR – punk skateboarding enthusiasts, or Rollbrettfahrer – makes for an amazing chronicle of youthful rebellion, defiant individuality, subversive history and bittersweet nostalgia in this artful documentary. Multifaceted and thought-provoking, the film combines home movie documentation, archival footage, animation and poignant discussions among the reunited principals, who reminisce about their youth in the 1970s and '80s in East Germany, and debate the realities of adulthood in the unified Germany of today.
