UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, September 29, 2017 – As part of the studio's ongoing commitment to inclusively identify and develop female and diverse directors, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group's Global Talent Development & Inclusion (GTDI) today announced the selection of eight directors who will participate in the new Universal Pictures' "Directors Intensive: Pitch to Premiere."

The studio, which exclusively sponsors the Sundance Institute FilmTwo initiative and is a sponsoring partner of AFI's Directing Workshop for Women (AFI DWW), will for the first time convene participants from these two programs for a weeklong intensive designed to introduce selected filmmakers to executives from Universal Pictures and Focus Features and provide an in-depth look into the studio's production process from development to distribution.

"With this program we hope to create an opportunity that not only leverages the access these two initiatives provide to our studio's executives, creative partners and storied lot, but to also establish an inspired and unique network of champions to build upon the directors' career momentum and development while supporting a new generation of incredibly talented filmmakers," said Janine Jones-Clark, SVP, Global Talent Development & Inclusion.

FilmTwo Fellows participating in the Universal initiative include: actor Clea DuVall (Veep); playwright Cory Finley, whose debut feature Thoroughbreds was recently acquired by Focus Features; British director Sally El Hosaini (My Brother the Devil, Babylon); and episodic television director Tanya Hamilton (American Crime, Queen Sugar, Greenleaf).

Participating AFI DWW directors include: Tribeca Film Fellow Joey Ally (HelLA); documentary and commercial director Rosie Haber; former music journalist Tannaz Hazemi; and director of a best of Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival short Manjari Makijany.

Sundance Institute |Universal Pictures Fellows have included Crystal Moselle, who most recently signed on to direct an untitled skateboarding feature starring Jaden Smith (The Get Down) and Steven Caple Jr., who is writing the Emmett Till miniseries for HBO produced by Will Smith, Jay-Z and Aaron Kaplan.

About AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW)
The AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) is a hands-on training program committed to increasing the number of women working professionally in screen directing. DWW is open to women with three years or more of professional experience in the arts. Each participant is required to complete a short film or series by the end of the program. Though the program is tuition-free, participants are responsible for raising the funds for their projects.

About Sundance Institute FilmTwo Initiative
Sundance Institute FilmTwo Initiative is a specialized artist development program of the Feature Film Program (FFP) dedicated to supporting filmmakers that are working to get their second narrative features made. The FilmTwo Initiative includes participation in the FilmTwo Intensive, strategic advice in navigating the industry and access to customized year-round creative and tactical support from Sundance Staff. In addition, all FilmTwo Fellows will be considered for FFP granting and participation in various Labs and activities on an individualized basis and be eligible for the Sundance Institute | Universal Pictures Fellowship. Selection times will vary year to year.
