FAQs

What is the submission fee?
The submission fee for the early deadline [June 27] is $30 for short films and $50 for feature films (over 30 minutes.)

The submission fee for the final deadline [August 8] is $55 for short films and $75 for features.

Can I get a refund?
The submission fee is non-refundable.

When is my film due?
Please make sure that your film arrives at the AFI FEST office by 6 p.m. PST June 27, 2014 for the early submission deadline and by 6 p.m. PT on August 8, 2014 for the final deadline.

Will I be notified when AFI FEST receives my film?
Due to the high volume of submissions, we are unable to notify each individual when we receive their film, however, you will be able to log into your account at Withoutabox.com and see if your film has been marked as received in our system. You can also receive acknowledgment of the receipt of your entry by enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope or a postcard with your submission, which we will mail to you once your film has been processed.

When will I know if my film has been invited to screen at AFI FEST?
We will be notifying filmmakers no later than October 10, 2014. Please make sure that the e-mail address that you provided on your Withoutabox.com application will be operational at that time, as we will be contacting you via e-mail. If your e-mail address changes, you may log into your account and update it at any time.

What is AFI FEST's premiere status requirement?
Feature length films cannot have played in the greater Los Angeles area. Feature length films are ineligible for consideration if they have screened or are planning to screen in the Greater Los Angeles area prior to AFI FEST - this includes the counties of Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura. We have no premiere requirement for short films (under 30 minutes.)

Do you accept work-in-progress films?
Rough cuts and works-in-progress are eligible for entry if submitted by the deadlines and if the final cut will be available by October 20, 2014. Please label your submission "Rough Cut" and specify what is missing (i.e. temp sound, needs color correction, etc.). Our programming staff is accustomed to viewing films that are missing minor elements. However, please be aware that our programming department may not be able to re-screen your film if you send a final cut after submitting a rough cut. To avoid confusion throughout the screening review process, we would prefer that you only send us ONE version of your film.

What if the programmers cannot get my film to play?
We will make every effort to play the DVD that you submit but, in the event that we are unable to view your film, we will contact you to request another copy using the primary contact information provided on your application. Please be sure that your disc plays all the way through BEFORE you submit it to us!

How many films can I submit?
You can submit as many films as you'd like. You only need to create one account, and upon doing so, you may submit individual applications for multiple films. We do not offer reduced fees for multiple submissions. For example, if you submit three films, you must pay the submission fee for each film. Please do not submit multiple projects on the same DVD.

What if my contact information or anything else about my submission changes after I've submitted an application?
You can log into your account at Withoutabox.com at any time to update or revise your application information.

What screening formats does AFI FEST accept?
We welcome submissions on DVD screeners only.
